As Mayor and as an educator, supporting our libraries and promoting literacy are both very important to me. That's why I'm inviting you to join the Mayor's Book Club, which will feature local writers and an annual conversation and event.
Our first book selection is "I'm Dyin' Here: A Life in the Paper,” by longtime Press-Telegram reporter and columnist Tim Grobaty, published by Brown Paper Press, a Long Beach business. I'm hosting a community conversation and interview with Tim on Thursday, September 15 at 6:00 P.M. at the Beverly O’Neill Theater. The event is sponsored by the Long Beach Library Foundation, and is free and open to the public.
I just loved “I’m Dyin’ Here” and thought it would be great to kick off the first Mayor’s Book Club. It’s an honest and extremely funny look at life in the newspaper business and here in Long Beach. I greatly appreciate Tim agreeing to participate in this event.
Please read Tim's book and join us for the conversation on September 15. It is available for check-out at all Long Beach libraries, and can be purchased online at Barnes & Noble, Amazon and the publisher’s website, brownpaperpress.com. It's also available locally at:
- Brass Lamp
- MADE in Long Beach
- Gatsby Books
- Barnes & Noble.
The book will also be on sale at the event, and Tim will sign copies after the discussion.
You can let us know you are coming by RSVPing at http://grobaty.eventbrite.com
I'll choose a new book to read and discuss every year, and I'm open to suggestions—especially local authors. Let me know if you have a local favorite you'd like to see featured.
See you September 15. Pick up your copy and let's read together!
