Developing Land Around Queen Mary

Tomorrow night the City Council will consider a proposal I’ve brought forward with Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal to create a Queen Mary Land Development Task Force. The Task Force would provide feedback and recommendations to the city for developing the parcels adjacent to the Queen Mary – 43.38 acres that include the Queen Mary Events Park, parking lots, and the Sea Walk Village, as well as vacant land. The area has historically been underutilized, and the time has come to see it live up to its full potential.

The Queen Mary is one of our city’s most important assets, and development of the surrounding land needs to be done carefully, thoughtfully, and with significant community input. The city has been meeting with Garrison Investments, the ship's operator and adjacent land lease holder, to develop a timeline and process for creating a new master development. The task force – comprised of representatives from downtown neighborhoods, as well as experts in tourism and hospitality, architecture and design, economic development, and historic preservation – would kick-off the community process and provide important feedback to the City.

We are well underway with developing the new civic center. This project is equally important for the development of Downtown and has the potential to really transform the area around the Queen Mary. I’m looking forward to hearing from the community about this significant opportunity for our city.
