This weekend in Long Beach and all over Los Angeles County, thinkers, artists, policy-makers and technology experts kicked off Innovation Week. The event is actually a full 20 days, from October 2 - 22. I want to invite you to participate in Innovation Week events here in Long Beach, and support the many innovators living and working in our community.
Los Angeles County is an international center of creativity and innovation, and Long Beach is no exception. With our renowned aerospace industry, growing arts scene, and creative tech entrepreneurs, Long Beach is becoming an innovation leader, and our quality of life and economic success are seeing the benefits. Innovation Week is an opportunity to celebrate and support our creative economy, and to learn more about the innovation opportunities in our city and our region.
I especially want to recognize the great work of the Long Beach Innovation Team (i-team) funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, which has been meeting with numerous stakeholders to develop recommendations for innovation in Long Beach, as well as our brand new Technology and Innovation Director Bryan Sastokas, who has been recognized as one of the top 25 government technology innovators of 2015, and has brought his pioneering spirit here to Long Beach.
One of the most important innovations we are working on is the Open Data Initiative, which will give the creative community access to our city's data so they can develop new ways to meet the needs of our city, improve efficiency, and drive further innovation.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of the most creative, innovative people in California this week, and learning about the great work happening in our city.
